My name is Kara Adams and I’m the owner of the new Market Place Gallery, St Ives. What an exciting new venture for me. Having graduated university in 2017, this is my first big thing being an official ‘adult’, scary! Opening in October, the odds were against us in the time of year, but, we did it and were open within 24 hours of getting the keys – we don’t hang about here!
My main ethos of opening Market Place Gallery was to:
- Bring Handmade British Craft and Art to St Ives that you wouldn’t necessarily find here, some more quirky and unique things.
- To include ‘up country’ artists as well as have local artists to bring together a variety of talents and beautiful pieces of work.
- To always have something for everyone.
That last one is so important to me. I want my customers, both local and visitors, to feel welcome and that they can find something to suit their wallets and tastes.
So, who do we have here then? In the photo above we have 2 local artists from St Just, only 7 miles down the road, the ceramicist and textile artist Jane Adams and the contemporary painter Marianne Nicholls. Both wonderful and creative artists who will always be shown with me in St Ives.
We also have a wide range of Jane’s white ware range with original lino cut designs in all manner of animals and we hope to extend that range, among other textiles too, to include original line drawings by another local artist, Justus Hattam. I’ll keep you posted.
Among our local artists we have our ‘up country’ ones. Several painters – landscape, still life and illustrative, so something for everyone!
John Connolly, Sally Welchman and Wendy Barlow are from Derbyshire, Brighton and Norfolk respectively. By bringing down these artists, local customers can see what else this small but talented island has to offer, not only Cornwall. Also visiting customers can see work they may not necessarily see from where they live too.
We have a tableware range from Stratford-upon-Avon, by Leyla Folwell, hand thrown using a beautiful dark orange terracotta clay and decorated with bright elaborate coloured slips and glazes. Can brighten up any table or cupboard in your kitchen!
We’re also currently expanding our jewellery range, so keep your eyes peeled!
But for now, we’re starting off small and hoping to grow our products before the summer season starts so I will keep you updated as and when!
I hope to see you all soon, come have a chat and find something you never knew you wanted!
